MANAGEMENT
OF PLANTATIONS
Plantation
grown teak (Tectona grandis) has a high density and naturally
high oil content. It's silvicultural management is somewhat
similar to that of English Oak, in that it takes around 80
- 100 years to reach maturity, during which time it's initial
close planting (to promote straight, unbranched stems) is
gradually reduced by a number of thinnings, to allow the remaining
stand to develop. In almost all plantations in Java, teak
seedlings are planted as part of an agroforestry programme,
in which the inter-rows are planted with rice, corn and other
cash crops, in order that local farmers can derive an income
during the initial years.
CARE
OF TEAK FURNITURE
Teak sawn
timber is resistant to rot when exposed to the elements, and
also to almost all know insect species attack. It will last
for many years in an unprotected state, and over a period
of time, the furniture will take on an attractive silver/grey
appearance.
